Camera Training
You are the waypoint in the viewer's visual conversation with the speaker. Every choice you make either sets them up to feel something, or gets in the way.
Clarity over cleverness. This manual exists so that when a shot is called, you understand what it is for — and can deliver what the director actually needs, not just the words they said.
Know your stuff. You cannot emotionally serve content you do not know. Learn the flow of the service, the shape of the message, and where the moments are likely to land, before the room fills. An operator who knows what is coming is already moving toward the shot when the call arrives.
Understand why energy is rationed. Your director's foremost job is controlling energy, and their hardest constraint is that if everything is high energy, nothing is. Energy only reads against a calmer baseline. This is why you will sometimes be asked to hold a still, wide, unremarkable shot for a long time — that shot is not filler, it is the contrast that makes the next moment land. Holding it well is real work.
It also explains why the more aggressive techniques in this manual come with warnings attached. When you spend a tight, tightly-followed shot on a quiet moment, you have not added energy — you have spent the director's ability to add it later.
Stay hidden. People notice what stands out. When the audience notices the camera, they have stopped watching the speaker. Your work is judged by whether the viewer felt something, not by whether anyone admired the move.
What do you want the end user to feel? You are the waypoint in between their visual conversation with the speaker. Are you setting them up to feel, or are you getting in the way?
Arrive thirty minutes before the call. Most shots that fail on a Sunday failed during setup, not during the service.
Walk to your camera and run the checklist in order. It takes four minutes and it catches nearly everything: legs locked and level, head fluid and balanced, record light responding, tally visible from your operating position, headset live to the director, lens clean, and battery or power confirmed. Check your framing against the other cameras before the room fills — you are one angle in a cut, not a photographer working alone.
If your tally light is on, your camera is live to the room and to everyone watching at home. Do not zoom, refocus, reframe, or adjust anything on a live camera unless the director asks for it. Make your mistakes while you are off air.
A properly balanced fluid head holds its position when you let go of the handle. If the camera drifts down when released, the head is nose-heavy — slide the plate back. If it rises, slide it forward. A balanced head lets you make slow moves with fingertip pressure, and fingertip pressure is what separates a broadcast pan from a nudge.
Framing is a set of conventions, not personal taste. When five cameras follow the same conventions, the director can cut between them without the audience noticing the seam. When one operator improvises, every cut to that camera reads as a jolt.
These are the shot names you will hear on the headset. Learn what each one is for, not just where it crops — when you know why a shot was called, you can give the director what they meant even when the stage does not cooperate with the literal instruction.
Every frame below is the same speaker at the same spot — only the crop changes. Note how headroom stays generous as the shot tightens, with the eyes on the upper third.
Twenty years ago in broadcast television headroom was kept tight — very little space above the head, with the frame cropping close. That was the 4:3 era, and it gave nice balance to a frame that was essentially an oblong square.
We now deliver in 16:9, a considerably wider frame than 4:3. To create a sense of balance and space in it, place the eyes on the upper third line. This gives slightly more headroom than seems strictly necessary, and that surplus is exactly what makes the shot feel open and expansive rather than cramped.
Remember where this is being watched. If most people are viewing on a phone, the image is already small and confined. Don't double down on that by starving the shot of headroom — too tight a headroom reads as claustrophobic in the same way a speaker pressed against the edge of frame reads as isolated.
Two reasons, and both are about the viewer's emotional state rather than the picture.
First, orientation. When someone joins the stream for the first time there is an inherent unease as their brain tries to find its footing. It is the feeling of moving to a new neighbourhood — you are not comfortable until you recognise a few landmarks and build a mental map. A viewer joining a stream is doing exactly that, and a wide shot of the room expedites the process enormously.
Second, belonging. Online viewers are not in the room, but they still want to feel part of a collective experience. An establishing shot that shows other people living the same moment turns a broadcast into a shared one.
A camera move should be invisible. Both follow styles below use pillowing — the difference between them is only how drastic it is.
Smooth Follow and Tight Follow describe how you move the camera with a walking speaker. Optical focus — keeping him sharp — is a separate skill, covered in Sections 04 and 05.
When the speaker begins to walk, you let them get a head start. Allow them to move just past the third in whichever direction they are heading before you begin your follow. Then ramp up from stationary, catch up, and bring them back toward centre — and as you approach that centre point, slow down to a full stop. Do not stop immediately.
Think of driver training when approaching and leaving an intersection. You ease onto the accelerator and you ease onto the brake; you do not lurch into motion and you do not slam to a halt. That ramp up and ramp down is what makes the move read as natural rather than mechanical.
This is your default because it mirrors real human interaction. You don't stare someone down and stay directly in front of them throughout a conversation — there is space for natural movement, and this style allows for it.
Here you are anticipating the speaker rather than reacting to them. Keep them on the centre line of your shot with only a tiny margin of flexibility to catch up.
One addition is essential in this style. Standard practice — what you will hear called lead room, looking room, or nose room — opens space on the side the subject faces, so they appear to be looking into the frame rather than into its edge. Our house style for a hard follow deliberately does the opposite: shift your shot a couple of degrees away from the direction the speaker is facing, leaving them slightly more room behind.
The reason is that a hard follow keeps the speaker near centre while they are moving and gesturing, and holding a little space behind them gives you somewhere to absorb their movement without a correction. It also reads as tighter and more immediate, which is what the style is for. Be aware this is a departure from the convention: when a guest director calls for lead room, they mean space in the facing direction.
Whichever way you weight it, do not let the speaker face hard into a nearby frame edge. That "staring at a wall" framing produces a disconnected, isolated emotional response in the viewer. Mr. Robot's cinematography is an excellent example of that effect used deliberately.
Move to Tight Follow when the speaker becomes more animated and excited — either because your director calls for it, or because you can see it happening and know the energy is climbing. Following them tightly implicitly tells the viewer they are right there alongside someone growing more passionate, and it pulls them into the moment.
The caveat is the governing rule of this manual, and it is why you should not simply default to the tighter, more impressive-feeling style: you cannot use it all the time. If everything is awesome, nothing will be. An operator who hard-follows through an entire message leaves the director nothing to escalate to.
Follow the eyes, and adjust the weight of your spacing based on the direction they are facing. You can get away with considerably more horizontal adjustment than vertical.
Zoomed in, every wobble in your hand is magnified in almost direct proportion to how far you have zoomed. At a wide focal length a shaky grip is invisible. At full telephoto it is the only thing anyone can see. The tighter you go, the slower and lighter your hands must become.
A related trick worth knowing: if a roaming operator is using proper technique with their hips as the hub of motion, you can approximate that feel on sticks by running a loose tripod head. Be aware that doing so moves your pivot point much closer to the camera, so a little motion goes a very long way.

Choose a follow style and the exercise will score you against that style's rules — Smooth Follow wants you to let the speaker get a head start and ease into the move, Tight Follow wants them near centre with space opened away from the direction they face.

The single most useful thing a camera operator can understand: as the room gets darker, your margin for focus error shrinks.
Your camera needs a certain amount of light to make a correctly exposed picture. When the room dims — house lights down for worship, a single spot on the speaker — that light has to come from somewhere. The aperture opens up to let more in. Opening the aperture is what the f-number describes: a smaller f-number means a wider opening. f/1.4 is wide open; f/16 is nearly closed.
Here is the consequence, and it is not obvious. A wide-open aperture produces a shallow depth of field — only a slice of the scene, front to back, is actually sharp. In bright light at f/11 everything from the front of the stage to the back wall can be sharp at once. As the room darkens and the iris opens, that slice closes in around wherever you are focused.
Our Sony ENG bodies are relatively forgiving here. Their 2/3″ sensors give considerably more depth of field than the large-sensor cinema cameras you may have used elsewhere, which is exactly why they are the right tool for live worship. But forgiving is not the same as immune — on a tight shot in a dark room the sharp zone can close to a couple of metres, and a speaker who takes two steps toward you will leave it.
Lights go down → aperture opens → depth of field collapses → focus becomes critical. Nothing about your focus technique changed. The room changed, and it took your safety margin with it.
Below, the top view shows the sharp zone as a band on the floor. Pull the house lights down and watch the camera open its aperture to compensate — and watch the sharp band close in around the speaker. Then move the speaker and see how quickly they leave it.

Shallow depth of field is not a problem to be solved. It is a tool — if you put the sharp zone in the right place.
A shallow depth of field is what separates your subject from a cluttered background. Music stands, cable runs, a door someone forgot to close, the back wall of the sanctuary — all of it softens away, and the eye goes where you want it.
Be realistic about what our cameras will give you here. The same 2/3″ sensor that makes focus forgiving also makes background blur hard to achieve — the two are the same physical fact seen from opposite sides. On a wide or medium shot, the background behind your subject will stay essentially sharp no matter what you do with the iris.
Separation lives at the long end of the zoom. Past roughly 55 mm the background genuinely starts to fall away, and by 80 mm it goes soft quickly. That is the tool: if a director wants a subject lifted off a busy background, the answer is to back the camera off and zoom in, not to open the iris on a wide shot. Note the trade you are making — at 80 mm your sharp zone is only about half a metre deep, so you have bought separation with almost all of your focus margin.
The technique is simple to state and takes practice to execute: put the back edge of your sharp zone at the back of the subject. Not past them, at them. Everything from the speaker's front to the speaker's back is sharp; everything behind them falls away. If you push the sharp zone deeper, it reaches the background and drags it back into focus — and you have lost the separation you were trying to create.
Focus on the eyes. When the sharp zone is thin, the eyes are the one thing that must be inside it. A portrait with a sharp nose and soft eyes reads as a mistake to everyone watching, even to people who could not tell you why.
Turning the handle away from your body pushes the focal plane farther away from the camera. Learn this as muscle memory. In a dark room with a thin sharp zone you will not have time to work out which way to turn — you need to already know, so that a correction is one confident move instead of a hunt in both directions.
Aperture is not the only thing that controls depth of field. Focal length does too, and on a long lens the effect is dramatic. At the same f-stop and the same distance, a wide shot can be sharp from a few metres to infinity while a tight shot on the same camera has only a few metres of depth.
This compounds with everything in Section 04. A tight shot in a dark room is the hardest thing you will be asked to hold: the lights have already forced your aperture open, and the zoom then thins what little sharp zone you had left. It is also, not coincidentally, the shot where any focus error is most visible.
Opening the aperture thins the sharp zone. Zooming in thins it again. When you are given a tight shot in a dark room you are working with the least margin the camera can offer — slow down, and focus on the eyes.
Depth of field is not a fixed amount your camera hands out. It grows the farther away you focus, and it grows quickly: at the same shot size and aperture, focusing at 4 m might give you a third of a metre of depth, while focusing at 16 m gives you nearly six metres.
This is why racking focus toward the back wall appears to make everything sharper. It genuinely does widen the zone — but the zone widens around wherever you focused, not around your subject. Focus past the speaker and you gain a large sharp region that he is no longer standing in. The picture has more sharpness in it and less of it on the person who matters.
A wide sharp zone is worthless if your subject is outside it. Always check where the zone sits before you notice how big it is.
The panel below shows the same scene twice — the top strip is the depth map, the bottom is what the camera actually records. Move the focus point and change the aperture until the back edge of the sharp zone sits at the back of the speaker. Watch the background go soft the moment you get it right.
Aperture is held at f/4 — the iris the room gives you. All you control is focus and shot size. Try every shot: on these cameras only the longer ends can actually lift him off the background.
Target: back edge at 8.4 m, with the background still soft. Too wide an aperture and you lose the speaker's own depth; too narrow and the back wall comes back into focus.

Keep the headset clear. You do not call back or acknowledge shot instructions — the director gives them and you execute. A channel filled with confirmations is a channel the director cannot use when it matters, and on a busy worship set that noise costs more than it confirms.
Speak only when you have a critical detail the director cannot see: your camera has a fault, you have lost power or signal, someone is walking into another camera's shot, something is happening off their monitors that changes the next call, or you genuinely cannot deliver the shot you were given. Say it once, say it plainly, and get off the channel.
Anticipate your director. Understand what they are cutting from and cutting to, before and after you. If you know your shot follows a wide from Cam 1, you know roughly what it needs to be. An operator who can predict the next call is worth two who wait to be told.
Be ready to save. Keep a usable shot at all times, even off air — the director may need to cut to you with no warning, and the shot they find had better be cuttable. The moment they cut away is your window to adjust and reframe.
Understand your audience. What are they looking for in order to feel engaged? And test your shots — know what your camera actually looks like at each end of its range before you need it live.
Do not chase it. Zoom out to a wide, re-find the subject, and ease back in. Chasing a lost subject at full telephoto produces unusable footage and tells the director you are struggling. Going wide costs you two seconds and saves the shot.
Power down, cap the lens, centre and lock the head, coil cables over-under, and report anything that felt wrong — a stiff pan, a soft zoom, a flickering tally. The next operator inherits whatever you leave behind.
Each part of a service asks for something different from you. Knowing the shape of what is coming is what lets you be ready instead of reacting.
The most dynamic segment, and the one where your director is working hardest to match energy to music. Expect shot calls to come faster here than anywhere else, and expect to be given two at once (Section 09).
Know the shape of the songs. The high point of a bridge is usually the emotional maximum, and the first beat of a chorus is where the director wants their biggest visual. If you can hear a build coming, you can be in position for it rather than arriving late.
Vary what you offer. Wide shots of the room matter enormously here for online viewers — they are how someone at home feels part of a collective moment rather than watching a performance alone. Faces in the congregation, hands, a musician mid-phrase: these are the shots that carry worship, and they are worth more than another safe shot of the platform.
Match the energy, but remember you cannot escalate from a shot you are already spending. Save your tightest, most active work for the moment the music actually peaks.
The most straightforward segment to shoot and the easiest to get wrong, because of what happens to your picture after it leaves your camera.
Side graphics change the frame you thought you were shooting. During announcements the switcher brings in a graphic panel from the side, and to make room for it your video is shifted to the right. The frame the audience sees is not the frame in your viewfinder — it has been pushed sideways and the left portion is now covered.
What this means for you is simple and non-negotiable: keep the subject centred. A presenter you have framed slightly left — which would look perfectly composed on its own — ends up pushed toward the edge or partially under the graphic once the switcher shifts the picture. Centre them, hold it, and let the switcher do its work.
Your shot is going to be moved after it leaves you. Centre the subject and keep them centred — the composition that survives the shift is the one that was centred to begin with.
Hold a clean medium or cowboy shot and stay there. Resist the urge to add movement to compensate for a low-energy segment: announcements are information delivery, and clarity beats interest. Movement is also far more noticeable once the picture is sharing the screen with a graphic.
The longest segment and where your following technique earns its keep. This is where Smooth Follow and Tight Follow (Section 03) live, and where you will be asked to hold shots for a long time.
Watch for the speaker settling versus moving. Some will plant themselves; others walk the stage continuously. Read which one you have early, and set your default follow style accordingly.
Focus discipline matters most here. The room is usually darkest during the message, which means the widest apertures and the thinnest depth of field — exactly the conditions described in Sections 04 and 05. If the speaker steps toward you, they can leave your sharp zone in one stride.
Listen to the content, not just the director. When a speaker drops their voice or slows down, something is landing — that is when a tighter shot earns its place. When they build, that is when energy can rise with them.
Unpredictable, emotional, and unrepeatable. You get one chance at every moment here, and there is no going back for a second take.
Two things are happening at once: the person being baptised, and the response of the people watching. Both matter. Know before it starts which one your camera is responsible for, because trying to cover both means missing both.
Expect faces — the person's expression coming up out of the water, family in the congregation, someone crying. Stay a little wider than feels necessary so you can absorb a surprise without losing the shot, and remember the rule from Section 06: if you lose it, go wide and re-find rather than hunting at full telephoto.
These are moments of genuine significance for the people in them, not content to be covered. Steady, respectful, unobtrusive work serves them better than an impressive shot. If a move would draw attention to the camera, don't make it.
Quiet, slow, and reflective — the segment most easily ruined by a camera that is working too hard. Everything about your operating should slow down to match it.
Move less than you think you should. Long, still holds are correct here. This is the clearest example in the whole service of a segment where a calm, unremarkable shot is exactly the right shot, and where restlessness reads as intrusion.
Expect the elements themselves, hands receiving them, and wide shots of a room in a shared moment. Faces are often prayerful or emotional — be careful and be brief with tight shots of people who did not choose to be on camera.

Show what is happening, then who is doing it. Stay smooth, but never stationary.
Slow down. You move faster than you need to — nearly every roaming operator does. The footage that feels urgent in your hands feels frantic on a screen.
Use three points of contact and treat your hips as the hub of motion, not your shoulders. Motion that originates at the shoulders is a series of small corrections; motion that originates at the hips is one continuous move that the whole body supports. This is the single biggest difference between handheld footage that reads as intentional and handheld footage that reads as unsteady.
Learn the infinite loop as a movement pattern, and use it to create parallax — foreground and background separating as you travel is what gives a handheld shot its depth and its sense of being in the room. A handheld shot with no parallax is just a shaky tripod.
You are one angle in a cut. The better you understand what your director is building, the sooner you can be ready with the shot they are about to need.
Directors cut in the pause mid-sentence, not at the start or end of one. A cut placed in a natural gap draws attention to itself, while a cut placed mid-thought stays hidden and keeps the energy flowing. The best moments to cut are where the speaker is transitioning a thought — adding to it or wrapping it up.
What this means for you: your shot can go live at a moment that has nothing to do with sentence boundaries. You cannot listen for a natural pause and use it to tidy your framing. The cut is coming at the point you would least expect a gap, so the shot has to be clean continuously.
Directors think three cuts ahead. Going into a chorus, they may give you two shot instructions in a row, then cover the gap with two other cameras while you make your adjustment — a four-shot sequence pre-orchestrated for the drop.
So when you receive a second instruction before you have finished the first, that is the plan working, not the director changing their mind. Execute in order, move with purpose, and know that your camera is deliberately off-air while you reposition. Musically, the emotional maximum usually lands at the high point of a bridge or the drop into a chorus — if you know that shape, you know when a big shot is about to be wanted.
Cross dissolves denote a transition in action; cuts keep you in the action. A dissolve holds both images on screen at once — so if you are moving during one, your motion is visible over the other camera's shot. When a dissolve is likely, being genuinely locked off matters more than usual.
Your shot may be going to the screens in the room, to the online stream, or both, and they want different things. The size of the screen changes how much visual stimulus a shot can carry and how quickly a viewer can comprehend it.
Online viewers want to feel part of the action. They need to see more of the space to build a sense of participation — which is why establishing shots of the room matter so much for broadcast. IMAG needs clarity of the live experience for people who are already in the room and do not need orienting; they need to see detail they cannot make out from their seat.
If you know which destination your camera is feeding, you know whether your instinct should lean toward showing the room or showing the detail.
The words you will hear on the headset. Terms marked house are ours — useful here, but not what an outside director will necessarily mean.
